    白雪纷飞的某个小镇，女警察海泽尔（苏珊·萨兰登 Susan Sarandon 饰）按照长官指示前往一位相熟的的老人家探望，谁知却发现老人被残忍割喉，死状凄惨。然而这仅仅是一个开始，两天后另一名农场主死在自家马厩，他的胃更被摘除后丢弃在荒野，任野狗蚕食。虽然两起案件距离颇远，且没有什么共同之处，但海泽尔坚信这是同一人所为。根据一系列针对老年人的谋杀案死者照片比对，海泽尔和同事发现他们的嘴被凶手刻意弄出了正在讲述什么的样子。经人介绍，海泽尔找到精通拉丁语的普莱斯神父（唐纳德·萨瑟兰 Donald Sutherland 饰），进而得知这一系列案件和天主教被禁止的祷词有关，其中语言会有12名信徒牺牲自己以换取某人的复活。
